This segment of our Employee Spotlight will feature the Crash Landings Manager, Sylva Behnke. Crash Landings Waterpark Snack Bar offers guests the opportunity to grab a bite without leaving the Lost Rios Indoor Waterpark at Chula Vista Resort. Dining items include foot-long Vienna hot dogs, mouth-watering hamburgers, crispy salads and Chula Vista’s very own Luigi’s Pizzeria. Crash Landings provides the perfect retreat from the balmy waterpark.

When I first started, my impression was that I needed to be more hands-on than the previous manager and expand the responsibilities for myself. Time management is key to this job. Over time I have been able to balance both floor and office management.

I had been propositioned by a director that worked here to come and see what [the position] is all about. After that, I set up an interview with my future director. I could see that I would be working with someone who is very knowledgeable in the business.

I choose to stay because once I commit myself to something I become very loyal. Yes, not every day is a great day but the ones that are great outweigh those that aren’t. I have worked with many different employees and I enjoy the diversity and the challenge.

My favorite part about Chula is the challenges, the people I work with and [I enjoy] that every day is different and rewarding in its own way.

I was most surprised by how integrated the owners try to be. The knowledge that they have from being in the business for so long is impeccable. I listen to Mike (CEO and owner of Chula Vista Resort) talk about how many different parts of the resort from equipment to vendors to simply helping troubleshoot. They wear many hats here and try to be invested in everything happening at the resort.

My advice would be that if you are serious about long-term employment come to work on time every day, give it all you’ve got and strive for excellence. Every position in this resort is important to make it function.

I am proud of the changes I have made in the daily operations of the food venues in the waterpark. Everything from quality control to cleanliness is a daily task. I appreciate having the tools I need to get the job done.
