No matter how long you’re vacationing at Chula Vista Resort, you never have to worry about becoming bored. Our Wisconsin Dells resort is home to two incredible waterparks and countless activities. Our action-packed property is also close to popular area attractions, including the Dells of Wisconsin River State Natural Area.

What to Know about This Natural Attraction

Encompassing over five miles of the Wisconsin River corridor, the Dells of the Wisconsin River State Natural Area is home to rock formations, tributary canyons, a gorge, cliffs, and rock formations. Some of the cliffs rise over a hundred feet over the water. Not only is this area home to breathtaking formations, it is also home to plants that are rare in this state. In fact, one species is so rare it is only found here and in the Kickapoo Valley.

In addition to protecting rare animals and plants, the Dells, designated a state natural area (SNA) in 1994, are historically significant. The scenic waterways attracted groups of Native Americans who left behind archeological evidence of their presence, including garden beds, rock art, and camps.

What Can You Do Here

Over the years, public access to this SNA has become limited. However, boats can still pass through to enjoy the area's beauty. One of the best ways to navigate the waters is on a tour with Dells Boat Tours.

There are a handful of public trails you can hike. One is the Chapel Gorge Trail, a 1.8-mile loop trail that includes a short climb down to the shore of the Wisconsin River. The other is the River Road Loop Trail, a .8-mile loop path. Whichever route you choose, be sure to remain on the path and keep an eye out for private property signs.
